Aug. 17 (UPI) — Christopher Morel delivered a remarkable walk-off home run for the Chicago Cubs, smashing a 99-mph fastball to right field. The 3-run homer, accompanied by a spirited sprint around the bases and a jersey-ripping celebration, provided a thrilling moment in the season.

“He got around the bases pretty fast,” commented Cubs manager David Ross on Morel’s performance in the 4-3 victory against the Chicago White Sox. “I wanted to make sure he touched all the bases. What a great swing and great environment.”

“Christopher Morel is just so electric. That ball was smoked. … Crazy, crazy swing.”

Morel had an outstanding game, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. He now boasts a .260 average and a career-high 19 home runs and 59 RBIs this season.

“These fans give everything for us, and we are going to give everything to them,” expressed Morel on the Marquee Sports Network broadcast.

The Cubs initially trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the eighth inning. Pinch hitter Nick Madrigal kickstarted the comeback with a 362-foot solo shot to left field.

In the bottom of the ninth, with relief pitcher Gregory Santos on the mound, Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger doubled to center. Santos subsequently walked shortstop Dansby Swanson, setting the stage for Morel.

With a count of 1-2, Morel faced a 99.5-mph sinker. He made solid contact, sending the ball flying into the outfield and clearing Wrigley Field’s iconic ivy-clad fence. Morel’s celebratory display included discarding his helmet and jersey as he met his teammates at home.

Bellinger also contributed with two hits and a run for the Cubs, while White Sox first baseman Gavin Sheets recorded a double and two RBIs. The Cubs (62-58) will host the Kansas City Royals (39-83) at Wrigley Field on Friday, while the White Sox (48-73) will face the Colorado Rockies (46-75) at Coors Field in Denver.
