Aug. 16 (UPI) — According to coach Mike McDaniel, Miami Dolphins star defensive lineman Christian Wilkins is currently not participating in team activities due to ongoing contract extension negotiations. This update was shared during a press briefing before the Dolphins’ joint practices with the Houston Texans in Houston.

McDaniel went on to mention the significant impact Wilkins has on the team and his desire for a new contract. Negotiations are underway to address this matter.

“Christian is not only an exceptional player but also an essential figure in the locker room. He believes that his performance deserves a new contract, and the Miami Dolphins organization agrees,” said McDaniel. “As a result, he has chosen not to participate in team activities until an agreement is reached. The decision to return lies with him.”

Wilkins, who attended the off-season program and training camp, has refrained from full participation in practices and the Dolphins’ preseason opener. He is currently playing on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract.

Earlier in the off-season, McDaniel praised Wilkins for embodying the expectations he has for Dolphins players and emphasized his importance to the team. New Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio also commended Wilkins during training camp, stating that he is one of the NFL’s top players.

Last season, Wilkins ranked as the ninth-best interior defender in the NFL, with a particular strength in run defense, based on Pro Football Focus. Despite the contract situation, McDaniel expressed comfort with the current state of affairs, explaining that he is engaged in regular communication with Wilkins and that this negotiation process is a common occurrence in the business.

Wilkins himself voiced his desire for a new deal and stated that he has given his all to the organization. He hopes that the Dolphins reciprocate that dedication.

In the Dolphins’ first unofficial depth chart, Wilkins is listed as a defensive end, with Josiah Bronson and Randy Charlton listed as backup options. Raekwon Davis, Brandon Pili, and Jaylen Twyman are listed as nose tackles.

Throughout his first four seasons with the Dolphins, Wilkins only missed two games, both due to being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list in 2020.

The Dolphins’ second preseason game is against the Texans on Saturday in Houston. Their preseason finale is scheduled for August 26 against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Jacksonville, Fla. The Dolphins will kick off their regular season on September 10 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
