Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Prospect Possessing Longest Name in MLB, Set to Be Summoned by Reds

July 17 (UPI) — The Cincinnati Reds are set to promote their highly touted prospect, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, according to his agency, Munger English Sports Management. When he makes his debut, the 23-year-old first baseman/third baseman will hold the distinction of having the longest name in MLB history.

Munger English Sports Management confirmed on Sunday night that the Reds will be calling up Encarnacion-Strand, who is currently ranked as the 88th best prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline.

Within the Reds system, he is the fifth-ranked prospect, trailing only Noelvi Marte, Edwin Arroyo, Cam Collier, and Adam Abbott, who made his MLB debut in June.

Encarnacion-Strand not only holds the record for the longest full name in MLB history but also has the longest last name, as reported by MLB.com. His last name consists of 27 letters, surpassing Simeon Woods Richardson’s 22-letter name, who made his debut for the Minnesota Twins in 2022.

Several players tie for the third-longest name in MLB history, with 20 letters in their names, including veteran catcher and first baseman Jarrod Saltalamacchia, a member of the 2013 World Series champion Atlanta Braves, who debuted in 2007.

In 67 games this season with the Louisville Bats, the Reds’ Triple-A affiliate, the 23-year-old Encarnacion-Strand boasts an impressive .331 batting average, along with 20 home runs and 62 RBIs. He was initially selected in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins before being traded to the Reds in August.

During the 2022 minor league season, Encarnacion-Strand showcased his abilities by hitting .304 with 32 home runs and 114 RBIs in 122 appearances.

The Reds, currently occupying the second spot in the National League Central standings with a 50-44 record, are two games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers (52-44). Unfortunately, the Brewers were able to surpass them after sweeping the Reds in their recent series.

Despite leading MLB in stolen bases and boasting a .333 on-base percentage and 345 walks, the Reds have struggled in certain areas. They rank third in the league with 19 triples and are placed third in RBIs with 440, fourth in runs scored with 457, but have a .253 batting average, tying them for seventh in the league. Furthermore, they currently have the fifth-fewest home runs in the National League with 99.

The Reds will be hosting the San Francisco Giants (52-41) at 7:10 p.m. EDT on Monday in Cincinnati.
