Chris Christie criticizes Trump’s use of campaign funds for legal expenses

Fmr. NJ Gov. Chris Christie: Trump will 'probably be out on bail' by the time we get to debates

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie criticized former President Donald Trump for using donations to his political operation to cover his legal expenses. Christie, who is known for being Trump’s strongest critic within the Republican primary race, suggested that Trump should sell his assets instead of relying on donations from everyday Americans. Christie’s comments came after campaign finance reports revealed that Trump’s political operation has spent over $20 million on legal fees in the first half of this year alone. These fees account for two-thirds of the group’s total spending during that period. Some reports indicate that Trump’s network of political committees has actually spent closer to $40 million on legal fees in 2023.

Trump faces criminal charges in two separate cases related to his 2024 presidential campaign. In one case, he has been charged with falsifying business records. In another case, he faces multiple charges concerning the handling of classified records and an alleged attempt to delete surveillance footage. Despite these legal challenges, Trump denies the allegations and has pleaded not guilty.

Christie expressed concern that by the time the debates begin, Trump may be out on bail in multiple jurisdictions. He called out other Republican candidates, including former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, for their reluctance to challenge Trump in the race for the nomination.

Christie also highlighted the expenses reported by Trump’s PAC, Save America. The PAC spent $108,000 on strategy consulting with Hervé Pierre, the fashion designer who has worked with former First Lady Melania Trump. Melania has chosen to remain largely out of the spotlight during her husband’s campaign for the 2024 presidential nomination.

Despite the criminal charges and Christie’s criticisms, Trump maintains a significant lead in the polls. Recent polls show him surpassing competitors like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at the national level. According to a New York Times/Siena College poll, no candidate other than Trump and DeSantis received more than 3% support from likely Republican primary voters.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment on Christie’s remarks.
