China’s Processor Chip Breakthrough Unveiled in Teardown of Huawei’s Latest Phone

Huawei Technologies and SMIC, China’s leading chip manufacturer, have collaborated to create a cutting-edge 7-nanometer processor for the new Huawei Mate 60 Pro smartphone, as detailed in a teardown report by TechInsights, an analysis firm.

The report, shared with Reuters, confirms that the Mate 60 Pro is powered by the Kirin 9000s chip, which was produced by SMIC in China.

Although the phone’s specifications highlight its capability for satellite calls, no information was provided regarding the power of the chipset.

This processor, employing SMIC’s most advanced 7nm technology, signifies progress in the Chinese government’s efforts to establish a domestic chip ecosystem, according to the research firm, as reported by Bloomberg News.

Huawei and SMIC have yet to respond to requests for comment from Reuters.

Chinese buyers of the Mate 60 Pro have been posting teardown videos and sharing speed tests on social media, suggesting that the phone can achieve faster download speeds than top-of-the-line 5G phones.

The phone’s launch coincided with a visit by U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, sparking excitement among Chinese social media users and state media.

Since 2019, the U.S. has restricted Huawei’s access to chipmaking tools necessary for producing the most advanced handset models, forcing the company to release limited batches of 5G models using existing chips.
