Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang Dies of Heart Attack

The late former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang was hailed for his accomplishments in promoting the Belt and Road Initiative, an ambitious strategy aimed at enhancing trade and economic integration across Asia, Europe, and Africa. He was also recognized for his efforts to achieve economic stability. Despite facing challenges such as rapid global changes, the Covid-19 pandemic, and economic downturn, Li worked diligently and sought progress.

During his premiership, Li carried out most of his work under the leadership of General Secretary Xi Jinping and continued to support Xi even after his own retirement in March.

According to his obituary, after retiring, Li firmly supported the leadership of the Central Committee with Xi as the core, demonstrated concern for the party and country’s development, and actively promoted the party’s endeavors to establish good governance and combat corruption.

Li passed away in Shanghai on Friday morning after suffering a heart attack. The news was reported by state broadcaster CCTV and the state news agency Xinhua.

Reactions and Speculations

Speculation arose when the Yan’an Elevated Road, which connects Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and the city center, was blocked on Friday morning, leading some to believe that top state officials were arriving in Shanghai. Additionally, the Dongjiao State Guest Hotel in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area suspended business after Li’s death, with reports suggesting that Li passed away at the hotel and police were present at the entrance.

During a foreign ministry press conference, spokeswoman Mao Ning expressed condolences on behalf of the government and urged reporters to refer to official obituaries and funeral announcements.

On social media platform Weibo, the hashtag about Li’s death had been read nearly 700 million times as of 9 am on Friday. Many users expressed shock and offered their condolences. The “like” button on Weibo posts about Li turned into a daisy as a sign of mourning.

Legacy and Recognition

Li became premier in 2013 and consistently advocated for the private economy, foreign investment, and streamlined government procedures. However, under President Xi Jinping’s leadership, decision-making power over economic affairs was transferred to party organs, reducing Li’s influence.

Li’s commitment to improving China’s business environment was praised by entrepreneurs like Wu Hai, founder of Mei KTV, who described Li as a leader who did his best for the country and expressed hope for his work to continue.

James Zimmerman, former chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, expressed sadness over Li’s passing and recalled their meetings, praising Li as a pragmatic leader who encouraged economic reform.

Retirement and Personal Life

Li retired in March, along with Wang Yang, former chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. Though Li had not yet reached retirement age, his decision to step down demonstrated his broad-mindedness and high moral integrity.

Li’s last public appearance was at the National People’s Congress in March, where he delivered his final government work report.

Li is survived by his wife Cheng Hong, a professor of English literature, and their daughter. His brother, Li Keming, held prominent positions in the China Tobacco industry and large state-owned enterprises.
