According to Elon Musk, China has a strong position in the development of artificial intelligence and will excel in any field it chooses to focus on.
In his video remarks at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Musk expressed his admiration for the talent and ambition present in China.
“I think there’s a tremendous number of very smart, very talented people in China,” he said. “I’ve always been a tremendous admirer of the sheer amount of talent and drive that exists in China.”
“So I think, really, China’s going to be great at anything it puts its mind to,” Musk added.
“So that includes, you know, many different sectors, sectors of the economy but also artificial intelligence. So, I think China will have very strong AI capability — [that] is my prediction.”
Musk has significant business interests in China, with Tesla selling its electric cars there and operating a major factory in Shanghai. He has praised Chinese automakers in the past, considering them to be the most competitive in the world. In 2020, Musk even proclaimed, “China rocks, in my opinion.”
Musk’s recent comments come amidst tensions between the U.S. and China regarding technology. However, despite export restrictions imposed by Washington, industry analysts believe that Chinese chip makers will still continue to develop their own advanced semiconductors.
The interest in AI and its potential transformative effects on society has grown. Chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT have gained significant attention, and discussions about the broader implications of AI on humanity have taken place.
