Aug. 13 (UPI) — At least 21 individuals have tragically lost their lives, with six others still missing, following severe flooding and mudslides caused by intense rainfall in Shaanxi Province, located in northwestern China.
According to China’s state news agency, Xinhua, over 180 residents of Weiziping, a village situated on the mountainside near the province’s capital of Xi’an, have been successfully evacuated. The torrential downpour, which lasted for approximately two hours, resulted in extensive damage, including the destruction of two homes and significant harm to roads, power lines, and communication infrastructure.
To aid in the evacuation process and restore the damaged infrastructure, 980 rescuers from fourteen rescue teams were promptly dispatched to the affected area. A command center has been established in Xi’an to facilitate the coordination of equipment and rescue teams.
Efforts to repair the heavily damaged sections of National Highway 210 have yielded positive results, with three sections already restored. Moreover, electricity has been restored to over 850 households, as reported by the Global Times.
The Xi’an meteorological center upgraded the alert level for this weather event to its highest designation on Friday.
This latest occurrence of torrential rainfall follows closely after the devastating impact of Super Typhoon Doksuri, which deluged Beijing with 29 inches of rain and resulted in the loss of at least 20 lives. Additionally, heavy rain in southwest China in early July claimed the lives of 15 individuals.
