Children Trapped on Dangling Cable Car Rescued by Heroes Using Zip Line

  • Eight passengers on a cable car in Pakistan were saved after being stranded 900 feet above a ravine for hours.
  • One passenger was rescued by helicopter, while the others were saved by using zip lines after dark.
  • The local mayor described it as a “delicate rescue operation.”

Rescuers successfully saved a group of children from a cable car that was left hanging in Pakistan, performing a daring operation involving zip lines to ensure their safety.

According to The New York Times, the cable car was carrying eight passengers — seven students and one teacher — when two of its cables snapped in a remote region of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province. This left them stranded approximately 900 feet above a treacherous ravine.

The passengers remained trapped for over six hours before rescuers initiated a lengthy mission to save them. One student was saved by a helicopter, as shown in a terrifying video shared online. The student was attached to a rope and slowly lifted into the aircraft.

Local mayor Mufti Ghulamullah described the rescue operation as delicate due to the chairlift being unsettled by the gusts of wind caused by the helicopter rotor. This caused fear among the children in the cable car.

As night fell, the helicopter rescue was abandoned in favor of using zip lines to save the remaining passengers. The Pakistani military was involved in the operation, along with local volunteers from the area, as reported by the Times. Multiple videos emerged, such as one posted by journalist Zahid Gishkori on Twitter, showing students harnessed to rescuers on the zip line, being pulled to safety in the forested darkness with onlookers cheering.

“It involved not just the military but the local expertise, including brave volunteers from the area as well,” stated Al Jazeera correspondent Kamal Hyder. “There is a sigh of relief across the country.”

In response to the incident, the caretaker prime minister of Pakistan, Anwaar ul Haq Kakar, has called for an investigation into the safety of all private cable car operations in the country.
