Child Trafficking Professional Questions Authenticity of Toddler “Lure” Theory

  • Carlee Russell disappeared after contacting the Alabama police regarding a toddler on an interstate.
  • Experts dismiss the theory that the toddler was a lure used by sex traffickers to abduct her.
  • Traffickers typically employ other tactics such as offering shelter, money, drugs, and a sense of family, rather than abducting victims.

Carlee Russell, 25, alerted the Alabama police on Thursday night when she spotted a toddler in a diaper walking along the highway.

During the phone call with a family friend, Russell suddenly screamed into her cell phone before disappearing.

The story took a dramatic turn when Russell reappeared on Saturday night at her own doorstep.

Her boyfriend claimed she had been kidnapped and was fighting for her life for two days.

However, it is unlikely that sex traffickers used a toddler as a lure, as this is not a common tactic employed by traffickers.

According to Sabrina Thulander from Polaris, a nonprofit organization running the National Human Trafficking Hotline, kidnapping and luring kind-hearted women are myths associated with trafficking.

The majority of trafficking cases involve exploitation through manipulation, vulnerability, and control rather than abduction.

It is important to debunk these rumors and focus on the real methods used by traffickers, such as exploiting familial ties, exploiting needs, or using social media for recruitment.

While abduction is not unheard of, it is highly unlikely in this case, as there have been no reports of a missing toddler from the same location.

Russell’s mother and boyfriend have not responded to inquiries for comment.

The Crime Stoppers reward money raised for Russell’s safe return is being returned to donors.
