Child Accidentally Fires Handgun, Injuring Pregnant Mother

In a tragic incident in Ohio, a pregnant woman and her unborn child lost their lives when her 2-year-old son accidentally got hold of his father’s handgun. The Norwalk Police Department reported that Laura Ilg, 31, who was 33 weeks pregnant, called 911 to report that her son had shot her in the back. Despite immediate medical attention and an emergency C-section, both the mother and her unborn son could not be saved.

The police responded swiftly and found Ilg conscious with her toddler in the main upstairs bedroom, where the firearm was located. Norwalk Police Chief David Smith revealed during a press conference that Ilg had informed officers that her toddler had accessed the primary bedroom while she was doing laundry and began playing with the gun. The gun, it was noted, belonged to the father, who was at work at the time of the incident.

Officers at the scene confiscated a Sig Sauer P365 Nitro Micro-Compact semi-automatic pistol, along with a spent shell casing. Further search of the home led to the discovery of a loaded 12-gauge shotgun in a closet, a Carbine AirSoft rifle in a computer room, and an additional 12-round magazine from inside the nightstand in the primary bedroom.

The Huron County Prosecutor’s Office will examine the case and decide whether to press criminal charges. Meanwhile, the toddler is in the care of his father.

Laura Ilg was fondly remembered in her obituary as a dedicated wife and mother who had a passion for “Harry Potter,” board games, and crafting. Her husband, Alek Ilg, expressed his deep sorrow and paid tribute to his wife and unborn child on Facebook.

The functionality of the gun and how the 2-year-old boy managed to pull the trigger is currently under investigation. It should be noted that Sig Sauer, the manufacturer of the handgun, has faced numerous lawsuits alleging faulty design resulting in misfirings that cause injuries or death.
