Chicago Pedestrians Face Peregrine Falcon Dive-Bombing

Chicago has become home to a pair of protective peregrine falcon parents who are raising three chicks on Wacker Drive. These fascinating birds have been known to attack pedestrians who come too close to their nest, as Chuck Valauskas discovered when he was struck on the head by one. Valauskas, a patent attorney, described the impact as feeling like a 16-inch softball and sustained a small gash on his head as a result. He now avoids walking beneath the nest and even received a tetanus shot as a precaution. Other individuals have also fallen victim to the falcons’ ferocity, according to building security guards.

In response to these incidents, building managers have taken action by putting up two warning signs to alert pedestrians of the falcons’ protective behavior. The signs urge people to take a different path to avoid potential attacks. Meanwhile, Ruben Guardiola has been observing the falcons from his window on the 10th floor. He has noticed their increased aggression towards passersby since their chicks hatched last week. Guardiola pointed out that the building was designed with birds in mind, lacking any people or predators.

Mary Hennen, who leads the peregrine program at Chicago’s Field Museum, shared that the falcons have been nesting at this building since at least 2016. This year, the nest is positioned low enough for the falcons to perceive pedestrians as threats and display protective behavior. With their ability to dive at speeds exceeding 200 mph (321.87 kilometers per hour), these peregrine falcons certainly know how to intimidate. Hennen explained that when the falcons swoop at people, it is a deliberate attempt to scare them away and ensure the safety of their young.

Fortunately, the falcons will likely leave the area in a few days or weeks. As soon as the chicks develop their flying skills, they will no longer need the protection of the nest. In the meantime, pedestrians are advised to exercise caution and respect the boundaries of the falcon family.
