Check If Your Travel Insurance Covers You for Strikes and Extreme Weather, Holidaymakers Advised

Certain travel insurance policies may not provide coverage for disruptions caused by planned strikes and protests across Europe during the summer.

According to the experts at Peopl Insurance, which offers insurance through credit unions, some policies may not cover individuals who miss their flights due to long airport security queues.

This warning to check travel insurance coverage for disruptions caused by strikes and protests comes as Europe experiences a wave of industrial and civil unrest.

Unions in France are currently protesting against an increase in the legal retirement age from 62 to 64.

In Scotland, the Unite union has warned of potential “travel chaos” at Edinburgh Airport due to a strike over a pay dispute.

London’s Heathrow Airport is also facing strikes by over 2,000 security staff members due to pay issues.

Italian unions representing airline, rail, and public transport staff have also announced several strikes this year.

Peopl Insurance experts advise travelers to carefully review and understand their travel insurance policies, particularly when it comes to coverage for industrial action, civil unrest, extreme weather events, and airport security queues.

Paul Walsh, the CEO of Peopl Insurance, highlights the disruptive impact of recent strikes on people’s travel plans and emphasizes the importance of understanding policy coverage before purchasing.

Strikes can cause delays in catching flights or ferries, and there is a possibility of missing a flight or sailing altogether, potentially ruining a holiday.

Mr. Walsh explains that while some travel insurance policies may cover expenses in case of holiday abandonment, missed flights, or delays caused by unexpected work stoppages or strikes at airports or ferry ports, others may have more limited coverage or exclude strikes entirely.

Multitrip.com, an insurer, has noticed an increase in the number of people adding “disruption cover” to their travel insurance in order to protect themselves from strikes.

Jason Whelan of Multitrip.com points out that holidaymakers are taking precautions to safeguard their pre-paid costs and potential expenses. While European airlines are obligated to offer refunds or reschedule flights, this coverage does not extend to lost accommodation.

Peopl Insurance urges consumers to review their coverage and advises caution regarding the increased frequency of extreme weather events, which can disrupt holiday plans.
