Charlottesville Marcher Released From Prison, Faces Subsequent Arrest

After serving his earlier prison sentence for his involvement in the 2017 white nationalist demonstration preceding the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, a man found himself back in custody. The reason? Allegedly attacking police officers during the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. According to an FBI affidavit, Tyler Bradley Dykes, a former Marine from Bluffton, South Carolina, was caught on video tearing down police barriers, assaulting officers, and even stealing a riot shield at the Capitol. He now faces nine charges in the District of Columbia, including felony charges of civil disorder and assaulting or resisting law enforcement officers.WJCL.

Photos and videos from the Capitol reveal a man wearing a gray puffer jacket, an Adidas ball cap, and a gray gaiter to conceal most of his face, with only his eyes visible. He can be seen attacking officers and holding open a door of the Capitol as authorities attempt to secure the entrance. The footage also shows him stealing a riot shield from an officer and parading around the Capitol building with it. Thanks to a tipster, the man was identified as Dykes in late 2021. A unique eyebrow shape visible in both a photo of Dykes and a photo taken at the Capitol served as evidence corroborating his identity.NBC News.

Dykes remains in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday. Just two months ago, he pleaded guilty to charges related to the 2017 Charlottesville demonstration, where he participated in burning an object with the intent to intimidate. During that incident, he and others surrounded counterprotesters while carrying tiki torches and shouting a Nazi slogan. Authorities described the episode as “completely terrorizing.” Dykes was also accused of placing swastika stickers on businesses in Sumter, South Carolina. He received a five-year prison sentence, with 4.5 years suspended. Additionally, he was given credit for time already served in South Carolina while awaiting extradition to Virginia.WCAV.
