July 26 (UPI) — The Los Angeles Chargers have officially inked a multi-year contract extension with quarterback Justin Herbert, the team announced.

According to sources from NFL Network, ESPN, and The Athletic, the extension spans five years and is valued at $262.5 million.

With $218.7 million in guarantees, Herbert’s deal comes second only to Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson’s $230 million. Additionally, Herbert’s contract boasts the highest average annual value for a quarterback in NFL history at $52.5 million.

Herbert is currently entering the fourth year of his initial rookie contract. In April, the Chargers exercised their option to extend his contract through 2024 for $29.5 million. With the new extension, Herbert will remain under contract until the 2029 season.

The 2020 draft’s sixth overall pick, Herbert made an exceptional start to his career, earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors after throwing for 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns in his debut season. He continued to excel in his second season, recording a career-high of 5,014 yards and 38 touchdown passes.

In his most recent season, Herbert boasted a career-best completion rate of 68.2%, with 4,739 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 17 starts. With a regular-season record of 25-24 as a starter, he also made his playoff debut, completing 58.1% of his passes for 273 yards and a touchdown in a close 31-30 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Training camp for the Chargers began with the arrival of veterans at the Jack Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa, California. The team’s preseason opener is scheduled for August 12 against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
