4. Derrick Ansley Impresses as Defensive Coordinator

After the game, the Chargers awarded several game balls to deserving players. Offensive lineman Kelley and the rest of the offensive line received one, along with tight end Hunter Kampmoyer who scored a touchdown. However, the most notable game ball went to Defensive Coordinator Derrick Ansley, who stepped up and called the defensive plays in the absence of Coach Staley.

Coach Staley commended Ansley, also known as ‘DA’, for his excellent performance in this new role. “DA has experience as a coordinator, although this is his first time in the NFL. But he handled the responsibilities smoothly, and our players executed the game plan effectively,” Staley stated. Despite some mistakes, the team stayed resilient and achieved their goal of winning the takeaway battle.

5. Evaluating the Kickers

Cameron Dicker and Dustin Hopkins both had the opportunity to showcase their skills in the preseason finale. Dicker successfully kicked two field goals and handled kickoffs well, while Hopkins also made his kicks and had successful touchbacks.

Coach Staley praised both kickers for their performances and acknowledged that tough decisions need to be made regarding the final roster. The Chargers will only keep one kicker moving forward.

Additionally, JK Scott proved himself as a valuable asset on special teams. The Chargers’ punter displayed impressive hang time and consistently pinned the 49ers deep in their territory. His punts allowed the team to flip the field position and gain an advantage.

Scott’s exceptional punting was evident throughout the game. He recorded a 61-yard punt, a punt downed at the 8-yard line, another without a return at the 33-yard line, and one that brought the 49ers back to their own 1-yard line after a muffed catch.

Coach Staley acknowledged Scott’s impact and emphasized the importance of field position. He expressed satisfaction with the team’s coverage on special teams and stated that Scott continues to improve as a player.
