Celebrate Bambina Olivares: Saluting Her Success

Bambina Olivares graces the cover of the March 2023 issue of LIFESTYLE.INQ, showcasing her diverse talents and experiences. She has established herself as a prominent figure in the art world, with notable achievements such as curating the first group exhibition of Philippine artists at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila’s new location. Despite living in various countries, Olivares has always remained connected to the art scene, expressing her unwavering love and passion for the industry.

During her time abroad, Olivares held positions as Lifestyle Editor at the Standard, APEC, and Director of PR and Arts at the Manila House. With her eloquence and analytical mind, she has ventured into art criticism and maintained a column in Preen for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Olivares has also pursued academic endeavors, currently working on her dissertation for the Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies Masters Program at the University of East Anglia.

Her journey in the field of art began during her Art History elective at Ateneo de Manila University. After graduating, she immersed herself in French language and art programs in Paris, setting the stage for her extensive knowledge and passion for the arts.

Olivares believes in the power of education and has continuously sought opportunities to expand her knowledge. Her Masteral classes at the Sainsbury Centre in the UK left a profound impact on her, with its modern and art-filled environment. She was exposed to extraordinary collections, including works by Henry Moore, Francis Bacon, and Picasso. Currently, Olivares is focused on finishing her dissertation, exploring the power dynamics and cultural heritage of Hong Kong through the films of Wong Kar-wai.

Recently, Olivares curated an exhibition at The M, the Metropolitan Museum of Manila’s new location. Titled “The Hat of the Matter,” the exhibition showcased the rich culture of hat-wearing in the Philippines. Through a diverse range of mediums, including paintings, photography, videos, and sculptures, the exhibition delved into various societal issues and historical contexts. From climate change to gender roles, the artworks brought forth thought-provoking narratives. Olivares aimed to bridge the gap between contemporary and traditional art, preserving Philippine heritage while addressing relevant global issues.

Looking towards the future, Olivares has exciting plans for The M. She will be curating upcoming exhibitions such as “Sounds of Blackness,” featuring visual artists from the African diaspora, and “An Elusive Edge,” highlighting works by pioneering Philippine abstractionists. Her vision for The M is to create an inclusive space where art can be experienced by all, regardless of background or expertise.

Bambina Olivares’ multifaceted career and dedication to the arts have cemented her as a prominent figure in the Philippine art scene. Her ability to wear many hats, both literally and figuratively, reflects her versatile and creative approach to her work. As she continues to curate and contribute to the cultural landscape, Olivares remains a driving force in the promotion and appreciation of art in the Philippines.
