CBC Urges Newsom to Appoint Barbara Lee for Feinstein’s Seat: A Standout Candidate

The Congressional Black Caucus is advocating for the appointment of Rep. Barbara Lee to fulfill the vacant seat of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, as the public and Congress await the decision of California Governor Gavin Newsom. The CBC Chairman Steven Horsford (D-Nev.) stated in a letter to Newsom that Lee’s progressive track record makes her the ideal candidate to succeed Feinstein, renowned for her battle against the gun lobby, who passed away recently at the age of 90.

Horsford wrote, “Lee’s unparalleled legislative record, longstanding leadership in the Democratic Party, and deep commitment to justice and equality cannot be equalled. She is the only person with the courage, vision, and track record to eradicate poverty, challenge the fossil fuel industry, defend our democracy, and relentlessly advance the progressive agenda.”

Newsom has not publicly responded to the CBC’s letter but previously pledged that he would appoint a Black woman to fill any future Senate vacancies in California. However, he made it clear that he does not intend to appoint someone who plans to hold the seat permanently, which includes Lee.

Feinstein had announced her plans to retire in 2024, creating an opportunity for other Democrats to vie for her seat. Lee is the only Black woman officially running for the position, competing against Democratic representatives Adam Schiff and Katie Porter. Both Schiff and Porter have more campaign funding and higher polling numbers than Lee.

In response to Newsom’s comments, Lee voiced her concern in a post, stating, “The idea that a Black woman should be appointed only as a caretaker to simply check a box is insulting to countless Black women across this country who have carried the Democratic Party to victory election after election.”

With Feinstein’s passing leaving Democrats tied with Republicans in the Senate and the Judiciary Committee lacking a majority, Newsom is expected to announce an interim appointment soon. The nonpartisan primary for Feinstein’s seat is scheduled for March 5, where the top two vote-getters will proceed to the November election.

Horsford commended Lee, saying, “She has always done what’s right, not what’s easy ― especially during moments of crisis. Her values have never wavered: she is a tried and true progressive who has been effective in delivering legislation that helps working people.”
