Caution Urged for LGBTQ Travelers Heading to the United States, Advises Canada

Canada has recently updated its U.S. travel advisory, urging caution for Canadians traveling to the U.S. due to state laws and policies that target LGBTQ individuals. The updated advisory includes a new section specifically for 2SLGBTQI+ travelers, providing information on relevant state and local laws. The U.S. has enacted nearly 500 anti-LGBTQ laws across various states, covering areas such as gender-affirming care, discussions on LGBTQ issues in schools, and access to bathrooms based on gender identity. The Human Rights Campaign has issued a travel advisory for Florida and declared a state of emergency for the LGBTQ community in the U.S. Canada’s advisory does not name specific states but includes a link to advice and resources on traveling safely based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland defended the update, emphasizing that it aims to ensure the safety of Canadian travelers. The government website on LGBTQ travel highlights the potential barriers and risks faced by travelers outside of Canada due to foreign laws and customs related to sexual orientation and gender identity. According to the Human Rights Watch, at least 67 countries criminalize same-sex relations, and at least nine countries criminalize certain forms of gender expression. Given that an estimated 400,000 people cross the Canadian-U.S. border daily and around 800,000 Canadians reside in the U.S., it is important for travelers to be aware of these issues. However, the U.S. is still marked as green on Canada’s travel advisory and advice page, indicating that normal safety precautions should be taken.
