Category 4 Hurricane Hilary Nears California in Unusual Occurrence – National

Hurricane Hilary rapidly intensified to a Category 4 storm off the Pacific coast of Mexico on Friday. There is a possibility that it could reach Southern California, becoming the region’s first tropical storm in 84 years. The storm’s impact is predicted to result in extensive flooding and other significant and rare consequences.

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Hilary had sustained winds near 145 mph (230 kph) and is expected to continue intensifying before weakening. It will still be classified as a hurricane as it approaches Mexico’s Baja California peninsula on Saturday night, and then approach Southern California as a tropical storm on Sunday.

The National Weather Service reports that no tropical storm has made landfall in Southern California since September 25, 1939.

Currently, Hilary is located about 400 miles (640 kilometres) south of Los Cabos on the southern tip of the Baja peninsula. It is moving west-northwest at a speed of 13 mph (20 kph), with a gradual turn toward the north expected by Saturday.

Southern California and southern Nevada may experience rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches, with isolated amounts of up to 10 inches. In other parts of the Western United States, rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected.
