The FX series “American Sports Story” was originally announced in August 2021 and is a scripted anthological limited series that explores significant events and figures in the sports world. The first season is based on the podcast “Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc” from the Boston Globe and Wondery, providing multiple perspectives on Hernandez’s life and legacy.

“American Sports Story” delves into Hernandez’s rise and fall, examining his identity, family, career, death, and impact. Hernandez, who played as a tight end for the New England Patriots, was convicted for murder and died by suicide in prison in 2017.

Production for the series began earlier this year but is currently on hold due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. The casting of Rivera and Schwarzenegger was done before the strike but had not been confirmed by FX.

Rivera gained recognition for his role as Chino in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 remake of “West Side Story” and is set to appear in the upcoming film “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.” Schwarzenegger, known for his work in shows like “The Terminal List” and “The Long Road Home,” recently appeared in “The Boys” spinoff “Gen V.” They are represented by Paradigm, Silver Lining Entertainment, Jackoway Austen Tyerman, and UTA.

Stu Zicherman serves as the writer and executive producer for “American Sports Story,” alongside Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Martin Woodall, Hernan Lopez, Marshall Lewy, Linda Pizutti Henry, and Ira Napoliello. The studio behind the series is 20th Television.

“American Sports Story” is part of the “American Story” anthology series lineup at FX, which includes shows like “American Love Story,” “American Crime Story,” “American Horror Story,” and “American Horror Stories.”
