Cast members of ‘Orange Is The New Black’ maintained second jobs despite success of iconic show

Kimiko Glenn, known for her role in “Orange Is The New Black,” recently revealed that her fellow castmates held second jobs while working on the popular Netflix series. She discussed the exploitative nature of the streaming industry in a TikTok video, shedding light on the challenges faced by actors. This revelation comes in the midst of a strike initiated by SAG-AFTRA members and the Writers Guild of America, which has effectively halted the entertainment industry.

Glenn expressed her frustration with the lack of fair compensation for her work on “Orange Is The New Black,” despite the show’s immense popularity. She emphasized the need for payment based on the number of streams the series receives. Glenn also highlighted the financial struggles the cast experienced, with many of them juggling second jobs, despite their international fame. The cast couldn’t even afford transportation to the set, resorting to alternative methods of commuting.

In an article published by The New Yorker, Glenn further discussed the residual payment arrangements, describing them as “just so sad.” Alysia Reiner, who portrayed warden Natalie “Fig” Figueroa, echoed Glenn’s sentiments, expressing gratitude for the recognition she receives worldwide but questioning the inadequate compensation.

Emma Myles, who played Leanne Taylor, an ex-Amish meth addict, revealed that she was paid SAG-AFTRA’s minimum day rate, which fell below $900. Producers had made it clear that there was no room for negotiation, offering the bare minimum.

The ongoing strike by SAG-AFTRA members aims to address these issues, including the overhaul of the residuals model and protections against artificial intelligence. Negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers led to a standstill, prompting the strike. The executives’ proposal to use digital scans of background actors without consent or compensation further intensified the dispute.

During a press conference, SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher emphasized the importance of standing up against these injustices, as failure to do so may result in actors being replaced by machines.

It is essential to address these concerns and ensure fair treatment and compensation for actors in the streaming industry.
