Cash-Strapped Hospital Embraces GoFundMe to Secure Lifeline

In a letter to government officials, the CEO of Bucktail Medical Center in Pennsylvania expressed the hospital’s desperate financial situation. Tim Reeves, as reported by the Lock Haven Express, stated that he had previously kept them updated about the deteriorating conditions and his practice of saving money for payroll. “I also said that when I needed to use this last reserve of cash, I would ‘sound the alarm’,” he added. “Today I am sounding the alarm.” In an effort to keep the hospital operational, Reeves set up a GoFundMe page. As of Thursday afternoon, the page had received 70 donations nearing $12,000 of its $1.5 million goal.

Reeves emphasized in his GoFundMe message that Bucktail Medical Center belongs to the residents of western Clinton County. As stated in the Patriot-News, he urged them to donate if they wanted the hospital to survive. Due to costs exceeding state, federal, and insurance reimbursements, the hospital loses around $150,000 every month. While it remains uncertain how long Bucktail can continue meeting payroll, Reeves expressed optimism about the upcoming weeks. He also addressed the wider issue affecting rural areas, stating, “If you live in any other rural area and you have healthcare available in your community, please pay attention. Your facility will be facing these same challenges soon.” (Read more hospitals stories.)
