Four individuals were transported to the hospital after a carbon monoxide leak occurred at La Quinta Inn and Suites on Canal Place SE in Rochester, as confirmed by Fire Department officials.
KAAL-TV, KSTP’s sister station in Rochester, verified that one of the victims was a child. However, their age and condition remain unknown.
All four individuals taken to the hospital displayed symptoms associated with acute carbon monoxide poisoning, according to authorities.
A news release from the Rochester Fire Department states that emergency crews were called to the hotel at approximately 11:20 a.m. after two people reported feeling lethargic following a swim in the pool.
Upon arrival, fire crews witnessed a partial evacuation of the hotel and provided assistance to patients before they were transported via ambulance for further treatment.
Crews conducted an investigation of the pool area using monitors, which revealed considerably elevated levels of carbon monoxide. Gas utilities to the building were then secured by officials to prevent additional leaks.
Minnesota Energy Resources was contacted to identify the source of the carbon monoxide leak.
In addition, positive-pressure ventilation fans were utilized by the crews to help dissipate the carbon monoxide from the building.
The Rochester Fire Department emphasized the importance of having a functioning carbon monoxide detector, as the gas itself is odorless, colorless, and tasteless.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning encompass headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. If you suspect a carbon monoxide leak, immediately dial 911.
