Capturing the Essence of Minimalism: Perceived Moments by Arvin Narvaez at ARTablado Robinsons Galleria

When asked to categorize his artistic creations, Arvin Narvaez finds himself at a loss for words. And it’s completely understandable.

He describes his artistic journey as a continuous exploration, making it difficult to neatly categorize his work. “Through the process of creation, I am constantly seeking awareness and venturing into uncharted territories,” he explains.

While initially focused on creating meticulous ink-and-pencil pieces that played with linear formations, depth, and illusion, Narvaez has now transitioned to abstracts in acrylic. His restlessness and visual curiosity have spurred this shift.

“I wanted to break the stereotype that artists should stick to repetition and avoid exploration. For me, art is about discovery and evolving through different processes and ideas, while still capturing the essence of being human,” he shares.

Narvaez’s exhibition, “Continuum,” is showcased at Robinsons Land ARTablado on the third floor of Robinsons Galleria until June 30. The exhibit features artworks that chronicle the artist’s ongoing searches and inquiries.

“When I first started creating art, I had a strong urge to explore further. I began with what was familiar, and from there, my journey unfolded naturally. Discovering different materials allowed me to express and communicate through a visual language that I was trying to convey. It’s an ongoing process,” Narvaez explains.

Inspired by De Stijl, Jaap Wagemaker, Mark Rothko, Jose Joya, and Gus Albor, Narvaez’s objective was to overcome the fear of venturing into unfamiliar territories. He sought to give meaning to his life and his artistic pursuits by embracing belief and discarding doubts.

As he delved deeper into exploration and experimentation, Narvaez’s creative process led to the creation of minimalist pieces.

The title of the exhibition, “Continuum,” is explained by Narvaez as a representation of the artworks’ time frame and stories. The paintings merge various visual styles and approaches, resulting in minimalist compositions. They reflect the realizations and learning experiences throughout the artistic journey.

In a typical art gallery setting, the constant exploration and redefinition of an artist’s body of work may not be encouraged. However, Robinsons Land ARTablado provides a fertile ground for artistic exploration, offering a platform for artists from all backgrounds to authentically express themselves. The team at Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC) believes in the ingenuity and artistry of Filipino artists. RLC has designated spaces in Robinsons Galleria and Robinsons Antipolo to host exhibitions for deserving art practitioners who possess a visionary artistic vision, talent, and thirst for exploration.

The impact of ARTablado has been instantaneously felt by the art community, which has longed for a platform where every artist, regardless of age or status, is warmly embraced.

“Being given a space by ARTablado was initially a surprise,” Narvaez shares. He didn’t even realize that he was speaking with Roseann Villegas, one of the key figures behind the ARTablado art initiative of RLC.

For Narvaez, it felt as though what he sought was seeking him. He enthusiastically states, “This saying truly works in mysterious and wonderful ways.”

Visitors to Arvin Narvaez’s “Continuum” exhibition will quickly discover the myriad of mysterious and wonderful emotions that can be evoked by his mixed media gestures on canvas. These artworks give form to visions of horizons and heightened awareness.
