At approximately 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Doron Asher Katz contacted her spouse. The 34-year-old was visiting her mother in the Nir Oz kibbutz, a communal settlement in southern Israel, accompanied by her two daughters, 2-year-old Aviv and 5-year-old Raz. “I received a call during which she informed me that they were confined to the security room,” shared her husband, Yoni Asher, in a recent telephone interview. The family’s home had been invaded by Hamas militants.
According to her, her mother’s partner had left the secure area in an attempt to communicate with the intruders. Unfortunately, the negotiation failed and the militants took him hostage, Doron informed her husband. “I decided to end the call to ensure her safety and prevent any noise,” Asher explained.
That call turned out to be their final conversation. Later on, using his laptop and accessing her logged-in email account, Asher checked the geolocation of his wife’s cellphone. “I discovered that it was located within Gaza,” Asher disclosed.
Then, an intriguing TikTok video emerged. The clip, lasting only nine seconds, featured a visibly frightened woman and two children being held captive on the back of a pickup truck. It quickly spread across various platforms on Saturday afternoon.
“I immediately recognized them,” Asher exclaimed. “That’s when I realized they were being held against their will.”
Asher identified his wife and identified the distinctive purple dress worn by his daughter Raz. Surrounding them were men in military vests. He surmised that the second child, shielded by his wife’s arms, was Aviv, although he couldn’t see her face clearly. The Washington Post was unable to verify the exact location where the video was recorded.
Since that distressing incident, Asher has been unable to locate any of the five family members present in the house during the attack. This includes his mother-in-law, Efrat Kat, aged 70, and her partner, Gadi Moses, aged 79. Israeli military officials have informed him that it is believed his wife and daughters, who also hold German citizenship, are currently held captive in the Gaza Strip. “There are no words to describe the anguish felt by parents in such a situation,” he lamented.
