Before leaving the General Assembly Hall, Gilad Erdan displayed a picture of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian woman who was brutally murdered for not wearing her hijab correctly. Amini’s murder ignited protests across Iran, which were met with harsh repression. Erdan criticized the U.N.’s lack of moral judgment and accused them of bias against Israel. He stated that other ambassadors have previously held signs for ideological reasons without facing any consequences.
The caption accompanying Erdan’s photo of Amini read: “Iranian women deserve freedom now!” Raisi’s presence at the U.N. General Assembly prompted protests outside the hall. Erdan viewed the U.N.’s decision to give a platform to Raisi as a “new moral low” and referred to him as a “vile murderer.” He expressed disbelief that member states would listen to a mass murderer and called on the international community to take action.
Erdan intended to draw attention to the U.N.’s hypocrisy and moral distortion. He accused the organization of giving a platform to a mass murderer who denies the Holocaust, threatens to annihilate the Jewish people, and commits atrocities against his own people. Erdan emphasized that Israel stands in solidarity with the Iranian people and desires peace. He criticized Raisi’s speech, which blamed the United States for global instability.
Raisi was previously sanctioned by former President Trump for his role in the massacre of Iranian political prisoners in 1988 and the regime’s killing of Iranian demonstrators in 2019.
