During the re:MARS conference in Las Vegas on June 5, 2019, Jeff Wilke, Amazon’s head of worldwide consumer, introduced their latest delivery drone.

Amazon has confirmed that it will not be hosting its re:MARS conference, focused on cutting-edge technologies like robotics and space, this year. Instead, Amazon plans to integrate these subjects into its existing lineup of Amazon Web Services events.

The tech giant launched re:MARS in 2019 as a platform for startups, academics, researchers, and executives to discuss the latest advancements in machine learning, automation, robotics, and space. The event originated from a private, invite-only version called Mars, which was hosted by Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos and attracted top tech leaders.

Amazon clarified that the decision to cancel re:MARS was not influenced by budget constraints, as the company is strategically evaluating costs across the board due to slower sales growth and an uncertain economic outlook. This evaluation has resulted in significant layoffs and the discontinuation of several initiatives, including the Amazon Care telehealth program, the treasure truck deals program, the Glow children’s videoconferencing device, and the Explore virtual tours service.

re:MARS was instrumental in highlighting Amazon’s pioneering innovations, such as delivery drones, warehouse robots, and its first home robot. In addition, Jeff Bezos engaged in discussions about space colonization and even demonstrated a pair of remote-controlled robotic hands during the conference. Last year, Amazon made headlines with a demonstration of a feature where its Alexa digital assistant impersonated a deceased relative.

An AWS spokesperson explained, “AWS hosts hundreds of thousands of customers and partners every year at various events worldwide. These events offer valuable opportunities for our attendees. We consulted our customers and the community and have decided to include re:MARS topics – machine learning, automation, robotics, and space – in our well-funded lineup of existing AWS events for 2023. We take our responsibility of ensuring each event is valuable to every attendee seriously, whether it’s through skill development, identifying transformative solutions, or fostering meaningful connections.”
