Caltrans Embarks on $2.8M Beautification Project for Interstate in South LA to Enhance Surroundings

Caltrans Commences $2.8 Million I-110 Clean California Beautification Project

Caltrans recently announced the initiation of a beautification project on the Harbor (110) Freeway corridor in South Los Angeles, spanning from Imperial Highway to Adams Boulevard. As part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s Clean California initiative, this $2.8 million project aims to enhance the visual appeal of public spaces, promote job creation, and combat environmental challenges.

“By combining public art with our transportation system, we can transform practical infrastructure into visually captivating assets that evoke community pride,” said Caltrans Director Tony Tavares. “Through the inclusion of skillful artwork and climate-resistant vegetation, this section of Interstate 110 will serve as a prime example of stunning and functional infrastructure.”

Collaborating with local artists, Caltrans plans to create three art murals near the intersections of Colden Avenue and Flower Street, 43rd and Flower Streets, and 43rd Street and Grand Avenue. Additionally, the project will incorporate native drought-tolerant plants, decorative rock-scaping, and durable fencing at various intersections along the corridor, including Century Boulevard, Manchester Avenue, 83rd Street, Florence Avenue, Gage Avenue, and Vernon Avenue.

The completion of this beautification endeavor is expected by early 2024, according to Caltrans.

Gloria Roberts, the director of Caltrans District 7 (encompassing Los Angeles and Ventura counties), stated, “This project will not only enhance the visual appearance of the freeway but also the adjacent neighborhoods. As part of the Clean California initiative, substantial investments are being made to promote equity in underserved communities through beautification projects along the state highway system.”
