California’s Epic Ski Season Finally Comes to an End After 275 Days

The ski season in California has come to an end after a remarkable 275 days of skiing. Mammoth Mountain, the highest ski resort in the state, experienced record snowfall this winter, allowing the lifts to remain open until the final day, as reported by the Guardian. The resort opened in early November, resulting in the second-longest ski season in its history, with the resort typically staying open until early July. However, only twice before has it stayed open into August, as mentioned in Ski Mag. The previous occurrences were in the 1994-95 season and in 2017, the longest season ever recorded for the resort, according to NPR.

Mammoth Mountain, located in the eastern Sierra Nevadas, received an extraordinary 715 inches of snow at its main lodge this winter, and an impressive 900 inches (equivalent to 75 feet) at its 11,000-foot summit. The resort’s average annual snowfall is normally 400 inches. This year, the snow maintained its quality as winter transitioned into spring and then summer, a Mammoth spokesperson shared with NPR. “On July 4th, almost the entire upper mountain was open. It was basically fully accessible. That’s extremely rare,” he mentioned. For those feeling nostalgic about the end of ski season, fret not – Mammoth is set to reopen on November 11.
