August 31 (UPI) — On a fateful evening of August 8, a remarkable incident occurred that left a California couple bewildered. A gargantuan chunk of ice unexpectedly crashed through the roof of their home in Big Bear, and its origins remain a mystery even to local authorities.

Jon LeClair, who was working outside near his truck at around 10:30 p.m., witnessed the extraordinary event as the ice plummeted through the roof and landed in the attic.

“It was almost like a sonic boom. It was huge,” he shared in an interview with KABC-TV. “My wife thought someone was breaking into the house. I had my doubts; it was like a cannon shot.”

Upon further inspection, the LeClairs discovered a 24-inch diameter hole in their roof, accompanied by a bowling ball-sized piece of ice nestled within their attic.

Initially speculating that it may have been a fragment of a meteorite, Jon LeClair now considers the possibility of it being something else entirely – a fallen piece from an aircraft.

“I’m leaning towards a plane, but how can that be with the warm weather? I mean, we’re pretty warm down here even though it’s 40,000 feet up. I don’t know,” he pondered.

Despite their attempts to seek answers, the couple has been unable to reach the Federal Aviation Administration for clarification. Additionally, the National Transportation Safety Board stated that the ice chunk falls outside their jurisdiction.

“I filed a report with the sheriff’s department, but even they are left scratching their heads,” Jon LeClair expressed his frustration.

These unusual ice balls that occasionally plummet from airplanes are referred to as megacryometeors and are known to make contact with the ground multiple times throughout the year. In fact, on August 15, a suspected megacryometeor left a sizable dent on a green at the Belvoir Park Golf Club in Victoria, Australia.
