California Governor Gavin Newsom’s One-Day Visit to Israel on His Way to China

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Governor plans to make a one-day visit to Israel this week. The purpose of his visit is to meet with individuals impacted by the country’s war with Hamas. He will be stopping over in Israel en route to China where he will be discussing policies to help combat global warming.

The Democratic governor is scheduled to arrive in Israel on Friday and leave later that same day to travel to Hong Kong. His office did not immediately provide information regarding his schedule and activities in Israel.

“I’m on my way to Israel,” confirmed Newsom in a message posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I’ll be meeting with those impacted by the horrific terrorist attacks and offering California’s support.”

Additionally, California will be sending medical supplies to the region, specifically to the Gaza Strip, according to Newsom’s office.

On Wednesday, Newsom announced increased security funding for places of worship in California. This includes providing $10 million to immediately enhance the police presence at mosques and synagogues.

“Amidst the ongoing horror in the Middle East following the unacceptable terrorist attacks in Israel, California is allocating immediate funds to enhance security measures at worship sites,” stated Newsom. “Every Californian deserves to feel safe, regardless of where and how they choose to pray.”

California is home to the largest population of Arab Americans in the United States, as reported by the Arab American Institute. Additionally, it has the second largest population of Jews in the U.S., as stated by the American Jewish Population Project at Brandeis University.

The war began on October 7 after Hamas militants attacked Israel, leading to Israel’s vow to dismantle the militant group. It has since become the deadliest of the five Gaza wars for both sides involved.

Newsom’s visit follows New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s arrival in Israel on Wednesday to express solidarity and provide support. President Joe Biden also concluded a 7 1/2-hour visit to Israel on the same day. During his visit, Biden negotiated a deal for limited humanitarian aid to be sent from Egypt into Gaza.

Newsom’s upcoming visit to China will focus on a weeklong tour dedicated to discussing climate change policies. He will begin in Hong Kong on Monday and also visit Beijing, Shanghai, and the provinces of Guangdong and Jiangsu.
