Caitlin Clark, Iowa women’s basketball guard, shares thoughts on Nebraska’s women’s sports attendance record

The Nebraska women’s volleyball team has made history by setting a new world record for attendance at a women’s sporting event. With over 92,000 fans in attendance, Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska, was packed for “Volleyball Day in Nebraska” where the Cornhuskers faced off against the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks. This record-breaking event surpassed the previous record held by a Champions League match between FC Barcelona and Wolfsburg.

The highlight of the day was the Cornhuskers’ entrance onto the court, led by head coach John Cook. Videos of this spectacular entrance were shared on social media, including one retweeted by Iowa women’s basketball senior guard Caitlin Clark.

This extraordinary event coincides with Iowa women’s basketball’s own upcoming event called “Crossover at Kinnick.” The team will host the DePaul Blue Demons for an exhibition game inside Kinnick Stadium on October 15th. A basketball court will be specially constructed on the north half of the field for this occasion.

Caitlin Clark, who gained national attention after leading the Hawkeyes to the NCAA Championship game last year, has become a major draw for Iowa women’s basketball. With an average attendance of 11,143 fans per game in the 2022 season, the team is aiming to break the women’s sports attendance record currently held by Connecticut and Oklahoma since the 2002 NCAA Championship game, which saw 29,619 attendees.

The demand for the “Crossover at Kinnick” event has been immense. Reserved seats on the north half of the stadium are already sold out, while general admission seats on the south half are still available. So far, almost 40,000 tickets have been purchased out of the total capacity of 69,250.
