BYU Dominates Oklahoma in Thrilling Big 12 Soccer Tournament Match

The BYU Cougars soccer team showed no signs of rust in the Big 12 soccer tournament. As the No. 2 seed in the tournament, they had a bye in the first round and faced the 10-seed Oklahoma Sooners in a crucial match for a spot in the tournament semifinals.

Bella Folino scored an early goal in the ninth minute, propelling BYU to a dominant 6-0 victory. The Cougars exploded in the second half, scoring five goals and securing their place in the next round. Folino led the way with two goals, while four other players contributed to the scoreline.

The first half was evenly matched, with both teams taking four shots. However, BYU took control in the second half, amassing a 4-0 lead and a 14-8 advantage in shots by the 68th minute.

To make matters even more certain, BYU added two more goals in the final 10 minutes of the match.

Head coach Jennifer Rockwood praised her team’s performance, stating, “At halftime, we talked about regaining our composure and playing to our strengths. We were frustrated by the Sooners’ direct play in the first half, but in the second half, we focused on creating opportunities. It was a phenomenal second half, and we had multiple players stepping up to score when needed.”

Overall, BYU outshot the Sooners 17-13, with an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeepers Lynette Hernaez and Savanna Mason shared the clean sheet.

In the semifinals, the Cougars will face the winner of the match between the 3-seed TCU and the 6-seed UCF.
