Bug Expert Warns Against Dangerous TikTok Trend of Killing Wasps with Gasoline

One of the latest trends going viral on TikTok is a clever hack for exterminating insects. Users are attempting the “gas in a glass” method to get rid of pesky wasps that may be causing havoc in their homes. The technique involves filling a glass, jar, or bucket about one-third full with gasoline and placing it against the wasp nest, effectively sealing it. The toxic fumes knock out the wasps, causing them to fall into the liquid. This TikTok video has garnered almost two million views. However, an entomologist has advised against this method for several reasons.

In some videos, you can see people scraping off the rest of the wasp nest and submerging it along with the bees in the gasoline. While some individuals have found success with this approach, Ben Hottel, Orkin’s technical services manager and entomologist, has cautioned against it. He explains that not only is this method dangerous, but it may also be illegal for exterminators to use, according to guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Pest control professionals are expected to use EPA-approved products, which gasoline is not. Therefore, using gasoline to kill insects could potentially get them in trouble.

Hottel further highlights the safety concerns associated with handling gasoline, especially during the summer season when fireworks can easily start a fire. Gasoline is considered hazardous household waste, and there are environmental concerns when it comes to disposing of the wasp-infested gasoline remnants. Dumping it on the lawn or down the drain is not a suitable solution. Hottel emphasizes that the EPA’s purpose is to ensure the safety of humans and the environment, and by using the “gas in a glass” method, individuals are bypassing these regulations. Therefore, he strongly advises against it.

Additionally, Hottel urges the public to exercise caution when handling wasp nests themselves, as it could lead to dangerous stings. Instead, he recommends hiring a licensed exterminator who uses registered products designed to safely and effectively eradicate wasp nests from a distance. By doing so, individuals can avoid potential harm while addressing the issue at hand.

Overall, while the “gas in a glass” method may seem like a creative solution to the wasp problem, it is not a safe or legal option. It is essential to prioritize safety, follow EPA guidelines, and consult professionals when dealing with pest control issues.
