BT to reintroduce WiFi phone rollout after customers experienced an inability to dial emergency number 999

The implementation of BT’s plan to replace copper landlines with digital phone services has faced criticism from TV presenter Dame Esther Rantzen, who has been an advocate against the rollout. Dame Esther emphasizes that copper landlines are a vital lifeline for older individuals.

She further explains, “The only way to protect vulnerable BT customers, particularly the elderly and disabled, from experiencing complete isolation is if BT has accurate information regarding their location and takes extra precautions to ensure their safety.

If not, their burglar alarms may fail, their families may be cut off from them, and they may not be able to reach emergency services.”

BT has announced that in the coming months, customers in the East Midlands, Yorkshire, and Northern Ireland will be encouraged to transition to the digital phone service. Customers who are willing and eager to switch can contact BT to initiate the transfer. The plan aims to migrate 10 million customers by 2025.

BT assures that over 99% of phone handsets are compatible with their digital phone service. Customers will receive a notification four weeks prior to the upgrade.

With regards to elderly customers, BT has improved its communication and support. Customers can nominate a family member, friend, or caregiver to assist them during the transition process. Additionally, BT has partnered with AbilityNet, a charity dedicated to enhancing digital skills, to provide digital training for older customers.

Furthermore, BT will offer free additional support to existing customers with specific needs, such as health pendants or those without mobile coverage at home. This support includes free battery backup units, engineer-supported installations, and hybrid landline phones. Customers requiring this support are advised to contact their provider promptly.
