A La Habra man charged with the murder of an 84-year-old man in the Whittier area last week, as well as an attempted attack on another man the same day.
25-year-old Kaszey Noel Encarnacion pleaded not guilty to one count of murder and first-degree residential burglary with a person present in connection with the death of Rolland Alexander II. He also faces one count of attempted aggravated mayhem and first-degree residential burglary with a person present involving the second man.
The body of Alexander was discovered on August 29 in a house on Goodhue Street in the unincorporated South Whittier area, just west of the Whittier city limits.
According to records from the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner, Alexander died from multiple sharp force injuries.
Investigators believe that the suspect also attempted to attack an elderly man on Fernview Street in Whittier, just minutes before the homicide. However, he fled when the man’s son intervened, as reported by Sheriff Robert Luna last week.
During a news conference, Sheriff Luna presented security video footage indicating that the suspect entered Alexander’s residence around 2:45 p.m. on August 28.
“Based on the surveillance video, we believe the murder occurred on August 28 at approximately 2:45 p.m.,” Luna stated.
The sheriff also mentioned that the security images showed Alexander’s silver Toyota RAV4 being driven in Ontario at around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, and later parked in Chino three hours later.
After receiving a report from a community member about a man matching the description of the murder suspect, Covina police detained Encarnacion, who had been reported missing by a family member a week earlier, according to a statement released by the sheriff’s department.
Initially, Encarnacion was reunited with his family due to a lack of evidence for his arrest. However, investigators later determined that there was sufficient evidence after recovering additional surveillance video and launching a 24-hour surveillance of Encarnacion, leading to his arrest on Sunday, as stated by the sheriff’s department.
Jail records indicate that Encarnacion has been held in custody since his arrest.
