Bruce Willis’ Life Terrified ‘Die Hard’ Crew Amidst Initial Scene

When the screenplay for the movie “Die Hard” made its rounds in Hollywood, it was met with disdain by top actors and agents. Steve de Souza, the film’s screenwriter, reveals in the book “The Last Action Heroes: The Triumphs, Flops, and Feuds of Hollywood’s Kings of Carnage” that actors like James Caan dismissed the script because the protagonist, John McClane, seemed weak compared to the larger-than-life action heroes of the time. Despite the initial backlash, Bruce Willis took on the role and transformed into an action movie legend.

The character of John McClane, with his sarcastic humor and initial loser status, caused many A-list actors to pass on the role. Clint Eastwood didn’t understand the character’s sense of humor, while Richard Gere, a Buddhist seeking more spiritual roles, declined the part. Burt Reynolds opted for a television special instead. Rumored actors who also turned it down include Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charles Bronson, Harrison Ford, Al Pacino, and even Frank Sinatra, due to contractual issues.

Surprisingly, Bruce Willis, who was initially hesitant due to his commitments to “Moonlighting,” eventually took on the role. Willis, known for his rebellious nature, was an unlikely choice. He had no interest in the action genre and had previously turned down the lead role in “Lethal Weapon.” His recent film, “Blind Date,” had also performed poorly at the box office. However, Willis found himself in control of the negotiations and demanded an unprecedented $5 million for the role.

During filming, there were concerns about Willis’s ability to pull off the action-packed role. Director John McTiernan had doubts about Willis’s acting after receiving negative feedback about his performance in “Blind Date.” However, Willis proved himself by pushing through physically demanding scenes, including a dangerous fireball stunt.

Throughout the filming process, Willis became more comfortable in the role and bonded with the cast. His impromptu wedding to Demi Moore in Las Vegas added to his confidence and he began showcasing his wisecracking persona from “Moonlighting” on set. As the shoot progressed, Willis’s initial apprehensions gave way to a successful portrayal of John McClane, leading to the film’s hit status in 1988.
