Bronx Residents Ache for an Escape from NYC

With an overwhelming majority of Bronx voters expressing a desire to leave New York entirely, compared to a lesser percentage of voters statewide, it raises concerns about the county’s influential figure, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. The survey conducted by Unite NY, a nonpartisan organization focused on voter issues, reveals that a dysfunctional government is a major concern for voters. Heastie has been instrumental in implementing laws such as Raise the Age and the no-bail law, which many view as driving factors behind the desire to leave the Empire State. Unfortunately, these “reforms” have failed to address the ongoing violence among Bronx teenagers. According to NYPD data, 58 children under 18 were victims of shootings in the first half of 2023. Astonishingly, last year, one in ten shooting victims and their assailants were under 18. Recently, Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz, a fellow Bronx Democrat, admitted that progressives failed to address shoplifting adequately by not implementing stricter penalties during the legislative session this year.

Carl Heastie holds a significant position as the first African American leader of the chamber representing communities across the state of New York. However, his focus on prevailing wage guarantees for his labor connections has hindered efforts to tackle the statewide housing crisis. Despite Governor Kathy Hochul’s plan to construct 800,000 housing units over the next decade, Heastie has obstructed progress and failed to propose an alternative. Since the discontinuation of the 421-a tax credit program, applications for new residential buildings in New York City have sharply declined. Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie shows no willingness to repeal the Raise the Age law or present legislation to address the housing crisis adequately.

The city and state are currently grappling with a migrant crisis while facing a substantial $36 billion budget deficit over the next four years due to a weakening economy, declining tax revenue, and escalating spending. If enough Bronx residents make the connection between their elected officials and the factors that make them want to leave New York, Heastie may find himself exploring opportunities in the private sector.
