Bronny James Experiences Cardiac Arrest Linked to Congenital Heart Condition

USC freshman guard Bronny James, son of NBA superstar LeBron James, is set to make his return to the basketball court in the near future. This news follows his cardiac arrest which occurred during a workout back in July. A spokesperson for the James family provided this update on Friday.

The cardiac arrest suffered by Bronny James was attributed to a congenital heart defect. This defect was discovered after initial evaluations at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and subsequent evaluations at the Mayo Clinic and the Atlantic Health-Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey, according to the family spokesperson.

Congenital heart defect is a broad term used to describe any abnormality in heart structure present from birth. It occurs when the heart or the blood vessels near the heart fail to develop properly before birth.

The family spokesperson stated, “It is a significant anatomical and functional congenital heart defect that can and will be treated. We have full confidence in Bronny’s complete recovery and his return to basketball in the near future. We will keep the media updated and kindly request privacy for the family.”

James was discharged from Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles three days after the cardiac arrest incident on July 24 at the Galen Center, where USC’s basketball activities take place.

This event occurred almost a year after Trojans center Vincent Iwuchukwu collapsed during a workout due to a heart ailment. Iwuchukwu recovered and returned to the court in January, playing in 14 games as a freshman.

James, a highly anticipated five-star prospect, joined USC in May with projections of being a first-round pick in the upcoming NBA draft. There was also excitement about the possibility of playing alongside his father at the professional level.

The Trojans have high expectations for the upcoming season, aiming for a Pac-12 title and a spot in the NCAA tournament. With James joining the team, along with the return of veteran Boogie Ellis and the addition of Isaiah Collier, ESPN’s top recruit from the 2023 class, USC is poised for success.
