July 25 (UPI) — The Denver Broncos have announced the indefinite suspension of defensive end Eyioma Uwazurike after he violated the NFL’s gambling policy. This suspension comes after Uwazurike’s involvement in betting on games during the 2022 season. Consequently, he will not be able to play for the entire 2023-24 season and can only request reinstatement on July 24.
In a statement, the Broncos expressed their cooperation with the investigation and their commitment to upholding the integrity of the game. They expressed their continuous efforts to educate and support all members of the organization in complying with the NFL’s Gambling Policy.
Eyioma Uwazurike, who was picked in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, made a notable contribution in his debut season with the Broncos, recording 17 combined tackles, two quarterback hits, and a pass defensed in eight games.
This marks the tenth suspension in the NFL this year for violating the gambling policy.
The NFL strictly prohibits its players from betting on anything related to the league, including using their phones, while at team facilities, stadiums, or during team activities such as road trips, plane rides, and hotel stays.
As part of their strengthened gambling policy for the upcoming 2023 season, the league will provide education sessions and in-person visits. They have also outlined specific rules, including the prohibition of betting on the NFL and gambling at team facilities or during travel. Players are also not allowed to delegate others to place bets on their behalf.
NFL players are further expected to refrain from sharing inside information, visiting sportsbooks during the season, and participating in daily fantasy football. The rule against betting on the NFL extends to wagers on events like the NFL Draft, combine, Pro Bowl, flag football events, and NFL Honors.
Last week, several NFL rookies reported to training camps, and all players are expected to join this week.
