Broadway Could Potentially Shut Down with ‘Yes’ Vote from Union

The theater industry is facing the possibility of a strike as the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) votes on whether to authorize a strike. This union represents stagehands, wardrobe personnel, and hair and makeup artists on Broadway and in touring shows across the US and Canada. Talks with the Broadway League and Disney Theatrical Productions have reached a standstill, leading to this decision. The Actors’ Equity Association, another union representing actors and stage managers, is already on board.

This potential strike is the result of negotiations for a new contract after the expiration of the Pink Contract on July 2. While the union has secured tentative agreements on issues such as employer-provided healthcare and housing for touring crews, concerns about wages and daily rest periods remain unresolved. With no further talks scheduled after a marathon session, the vote will determine if at least 75% of members are in favor of a strike, which could disrupt most Broadway and touring productions.

To rally support, IATSE International President Matthew D. Loeb has urged members to show strength and unity to secure better wages, benefits, and rights for all members. He emphasized that unless a deal can be approved by the end of the week, they won’t back down. This potential strike follows recent actions by other major entertainment unions, including the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the Writers Guild of America. The outcome of the vote will prove crucial for the theater industry.
