British Gas switch off renders homeowners’ security systems ineffective

According to Mr. Smith, he expected his cameras to last at least another two years. These cameras provided him with peace of mind as they allowed him to monitor both the inside and outside of his home remotely. They acted as a guard against potential burglaries.

However, Hive’s website states that the specific model of camera used by Mr. Smith is not eligible for a replacement, despite being removed from sale only in 2019.

While other products, such as the HomeShield burglar alarm and the Hive View indoor and outdoor cameras, will remain available online until August 2025, some products will be taken offline next month. This includes the Boiler IQ WiFi system, which alerts suppliers when a boiler breaks, and the Leak Sensor, which monitors water pipes for leakage.

Regarding HomeShield, Hive expresses a desire for the siren and remote features to continue functioning, but cannot provide a definitive answer to customers at this time.

British Gas, in partnership with Hive, promotes smart homes as a means for consumers to combat climate change. The supplier’s website offers smart plug sockets, lights, energy meters, and thermostats that are not only good for the planet but also the consumer’s pocket.

These devices give consumers more control over their energy consumption and can be integrated with mobile phones and Amazon’s Alexa smart speaker.

Consumer champion, Martyn James, highlights that under the Consumer Rights Act, goods are expected to last for a reasonable amount of time. Customers who feel they have not received their money’s worth should seek a refund or partial refund based on frustration of contract.

Hive explains that their decision to discontinue certain products, including security cameras, was made in 2022 as part of their commitment to making homes greener and achieving net zero. While the majority of indoor and outdoor cameras will be supported until August 1, 2025, a small number of these products have not been supported. It is important to note that these specific products have not been sold since 2019 and 2016 respectively.

Hive’s focus on net zero revolves around home energy management. They aim to provide customers with energy efficiency insights and connect new devices, such as air source heat pumps, electric vehicle chargers, and home batteries, to the Hive platform.
