Aug. 28 (UPI) — British airports experienced significant delays on Monday due to “technical issues” reported by the National Air Traffic Services.

Airlines including Ryanair, EasyJet, Loganair, and Aer Lingus all issued warnings about potential flight delays extending from morning to afternoon.

The National Air Traffic Services posted a message on its website in the afternoon, stating, “We are continuing to work hard to resolve the technical issue. To clarify, U.K. airspace is not closed, but we have imposed air traffic flow restrictions to ensure safety.”

No further details were given regarding the cause of the technical issues or the estimated time for resolution, leaving thousands of passengers stranded at airports, anxiously awaiting updates on their smartphones.

Ryanair released a statement saying, “Due to another U.K. ATC failure, Ryanair will be forced to delay/cancel a number of flights to/from the U.K. today. All affected passengers will be notified of their options to change flights (free of charge) to another Ryanair flight or receive a full refund. We sincerely apologize for this UK ATC failure which is beyond Ryanair’s control and is affecting all airlines operating to/from the UK.”

Although Loganair expressed hope that most of its intra-Scotland flights would operate on Monday morning, the airline advised passengers to check their website for updates regarding the ongoing delays.

Loganair added, “We truly understand the inconvenience this will cause, yet are grateful for customers’ patience.”
