Under Elon Musk’s revamp of the social network, Twitter has bestowed a gold check mark to Britain First, the far-right political party.
Britain First, an anti-immigration party led by Paul Golding, who has been convicted in the past for religiously aggravated harassment against Muslims, has been tagged as an “official organization” by Twitter. A gold tick signifies that the account is an “official business user”. Mr Golding also received a Twitter verification blue tick. The existence of both ticks indicates that their posts will receive increased visibility within conversations and users’ news feeds.
According to The Independent, Britain First reported that the verification on its Telegram channel was a “huge boost to our credibility”. In an email to supporters, the party also stated that it was a major step forward for the party and “We can finally reach the mainstream”.
At present, Britain First has 12,500 followers on the platform, while Mr Golding has 45,200.
