A woman suspected of aiding a hit-and-run motorist who struck and killed a 42-year-old Jurupa Valley woman is now free on bail.
26-year-old Erika Marlene Guevara, a resident of Jurupa Valley, was arrested over the weekend along with 25-year-old Jose Manuel Acosta Aguilar, also from Jurupa Valley, in connection with the death of Jamie Pruitt.
Guevara was taken into custody and booked into the Robert Presley Jail on suspicion of being an accessory after the fact. She managed to post a $37,500 bond and was subsequently released from the downtown Riverside detention center on Sunday.
Aguilar, on the other hand, remains in custody at the same facility with his bail set at $500,000. He was arrested on multiple charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run resulting in death, and attempting to conceal evidence.
Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Rafael Lopez stated that the suspects turned themselves over to deputies following reports of the tragic incident.
Pruitt lost her life in a fatal accident that occurred around 3:30 p.m. last Wednesday in the 5000 block of Mission Boulevard, near Crestmore Road.
Sgt. Ronald Smith explained that the victim was walking on Mission Boulevard when a white 2012 Toyota Corolla crashed into her. The details regarding whether she was crossing the road or walking within one of the lanes at the time remain unclear.
Aguilar allegedly fled the scene after hitting the woman.
Emergency responders from the county fire department arrived within 10 minutes but unfortunately could only pronounce her dead at the scene.
Sgt. Smith mentioned that it was confirmed the Toyota sustained significant damage to the front passenger side hood, fender, and windshield.
“Deputies conducted an extensive search for the suspect and the vehicle, but were unable to locate them,” stated the sergeant.
The direction Aguilar was heading or the speed at which he was allegedly driving remains unknown.
