Report: Warriors release Rudy Gay, Rodney McGruder originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
The Golden State Warriors have reportedly made significant roster changes following their 122-117 loss to the San Antonio Spurs in the preseason finale.
Citing sources, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that the Warriors are releasing veteran forward Rudy Gay and guard Rodney McGruder. This move trims the roster down to 13 players in preparation for the upcoming 2023-24 NBA season opener against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday.

According to Charania’s report, the Warriors plan to add a 14th player to complete their 15-man roster early in the season but will start with 13 players initially.
Rudy Gay, who signed a one-year, $3.1 million contract with the Warriors in the offseason, provided veteran leadership alongside Chris Paul, and younger players like Jonathan Kuminga gravitated towards him during training camp and the preseason.
Although Gay played limited minutes during the preseason, he made an impact in Golden State’s victories over the Los Angeles Lakers.
McGruder, who also had limited playing time due to a preseason concussion, showcased his skills in the Warriors’ loss to the Spurs, scoring eight points and grabbing five rebounds.
With their roster nearly finalized, Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. and coach Steve Kerr have the flexibility to make additional moves if necessary.
