Breaking News: Unveiling Apple’s Latest MacBook Pros, M3 Chips, and a Brand-new iMac

Apple unveiled its new M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips during the Scary Fast product event. These chips are positioned as significant upgrades over the M1 hardware. However, if you recently purchased an M2 system, you might not be looking to replace it just yet.

Among the M3 chips’ notable features is the GPU, which delivers advancements like hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading. These enhancements enable more realistic lighting and improved geometry handling. Additionally, the M3 chips are the first PC chips to be built on a three-nanometer process, unlike the M1 and M2 families that are based on a 5nm process. The smaller process allows for more transistors packed into the same space, resulting in improved power efficiency and overall performance. The revamped MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch models, as well as the 24-inch iMac, will feature the M3 series chips.

The new iMac, equipped with the M3 chip, will be up to twice as fast as its predecessor. However, aside from this boost in performance, there aren’t many other upgrades in the latest Mac. Apple has chosen to stick with a 4.5K Retina display. On the connectivity front, the new iMac supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. It will be available starting at $1,299 and will start shipping on November 7.

The updated lineup of MacBook Pros includes 14- and 16-inch models with new M3 chips and a sleek Space Black chassis. This may have been the spooky highlight of Apple’s event.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro, powered by a base M3 processor, is priced at $1,599 — the lowest price ever for this model. The M3 Pro version will cost $1,999, and prices increase for the M3 Max options. The base 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M3 Pro chip retains the same $2,499 starting price as its M2 Pro predecessor. Unfortunately, the 13-inch version is no longer available, bidding farewell to the Touch Bar.

In recent years, Amazon and startups like ReMarkable have entered the e-ink tablet market, offering capable devices at reasonable prices. Lenovo, known for its experimentation with e-ink on devices such as the Yoga Book, has now introduced its dedicated e-ink tablet, the Smart Paper. While the Smart Paper has yet to be launched in the US, it is available in other regions, including the UK. However, with a price tag of $400 (£500 in the UK), it is considered expensive. The hardware is impressive and useful, but the tablet’s value is diminished by a subscription service that requires additional expenses.

The latest attempt to combat misinformation.

X will stop compensating creators for tweets that promote misinformation. Elon Musk announced a “slight change” in the company’s monetization program, stating that tweets fact-checked using community notes will no longer qualify for payouts.

This change comes as researchers, fact-checkers, and journalists raise concerns about the significant amount of viral misinformation circulating on X during the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza. Recent analysis from NewsGuard, a nonprofit organization tracking misinformation, reveals that 74 percent of the “most viral posts on X spreading misinformation about the Israel–Hamas war are shared by ‘verified’ X accounts.”
