Breaking News: Tragic Incident at GameStop – Manager’s Fatal Encounter with Suspected Shoplifter

A Florida GameStop manager has been charged with manslaughter after, police say, he fatally shot an alleged shoplifter at the Pembroke Pines store. According to reports, an adult male entered the store on Tuesday night and spent about an hour there before requesting the manager’s assistance in retrieving an item from a high shelf at the back of the store. While the manager was helping him, the customer took advantage and tried to steal merchandise from behind the counter. The man managed to grab five boxes of Pokemon collectible trading cards worth $120 each before making a run for it. In response, 33-year-old Derrick Guerrero, the manager (also referred to as a clerk in some media outlets), yelled at the man and then pulled out a handgun concealed in his waistband, firing at him.

Authorities state that Guerrero had purchased the gun after being a victim of an unrelated robbery at the store last month. The shoplifter was hit in the side, dropped the stolen cards, and fled to a waiting pickup truck where his girlfriend was. They initially drove away from the scene, but the woman eventually called 911 when the man became unresponsive. He later died at a hospital. Police clarify that the alleged shoplifter was unarmed, and surveillance footage indicates that he never posed a threat to Guerrero. While Florida’s Stand Your Ground laws protect individuals who use firearms to defend themselves or others from harm, they do not constitute a valid defense for protecting property.
