Jil McIntosh graduated from East York Collegiate in Toronto and embarked on her career by immersing herself in the School of Hard Knocks. Her early experiences included driving a taxi in Toronto and working in warranty administration at a new-vehicle dealership. During this time, she also conducted information classes for customers, unraveling the intricacies of vehicle mechanics and features.
Award-Winning Career
Jil McIntosh’s journey as a professional writer began when carburetors were still commonplace in cars. Remarkably, she had her first story published in the Toronto Telegram newspaper at the age of eleven, earning a noteworthy payment of $25. Since then, she has honed her skills through crafting stories for antique-car and hot-rod car club magazines.
Her association with Old Autos, the Ontario-based newspaper focused on the antique-car hobby, began in 1987, where she commenced her column in the second issue. Jil continues to write for the publication, which has stood the test of time. In 1986, she also became one of the regular writers for the Toronto Star’s groundbreaking auto section, Wheels. Over the years, she expanded her repertoire by becoming a respected new-vehicle reviewer.
Aside from her work at Driving.ca, Jil’s automotive expertise is sought after by industry-focused publications such as Automotive News Canada and Autosphere. Her automotive articles have graced the pages of well-known publications like Cars & Parts, Street Rodder, Canadian Hot Rods, AutoTrader, and more. Additionally, her non-automotive work has been published in prestigious magazines including Harrowsmith, Where New Orleans, Pen World, and Rural Delivery.

She has also been the recipient of the Car Care Canada / CAA Safety Journalism award in 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2013. Her talents extend beyond writing, as she was recognized with the Pirelli Photography Award in 2015, the Environmental Journalism Award in 2019, the Technical Writing Award in 2020, and the Vehicle Testing Review award in 2020. She was also inducted into the Street Rodding Hall of Fame in 1994.
